Of all the posts that have shown up on the proliferous Cargo Culte blog, the one I have gone back to quite often is I Hate Art, Can’t Stand It, which provides a nice companion soundtrack to Simon Reynolds’ book Rip It Up and Start Again: Postpunk 1978-1984. With the permission of the Demagogues of the Cargo Culte, I have compiled 15 more hits from Art Punk’s formative years. Some of the bands are mentioned in Reynolds’ book; others are not. While you are listening to the tunes, you may also want to check out a recent addition to the 33 1/3 series, Wire’s Pink Flag, Wilson Neate’s in-depth research into that seminal album. I did not put anything from Pink Flag on the list, but I did include a couple of Wire-related projects.
The Red Krayola/Born in Flames
Girls at Our Best/Getting Nowhere Fast
Glaxo Babies/Maximum Sexual Joy
Swell Maps/The Helicopter Spies
Ivor Cutler & Linda Hirst/Women of the World
She was my dark haired Lydia
Of my suburban German dreams
And he was the boy-boy-boy called James
And it will all end up like the New York scene
Too much drugs, too much pills
And too much-too much-too much songs
Suicide commando suicide is suicide is suicide
Suicide commando suicide is suicide is suicide
King Kong was a murderer
But it-but it-but it was me
I can’t stand the scene at all-the scene at all-the scene at all
You are hip and you are down
You are hip and you are down
Find a city, find a room
And find a-find a-find a drug
Suicide commando suicide is suicide is suicide
Suicide commando suicide is suicide is suicide
She was my dark haired Lydia
Of my suburban German dreams
And he was the boy-boy-boy called James
And it will all end up like the New York scene
Too much drugs, too much pills
And too much-too much-too much lies
Suicide commando suicide is suicide is suicide
Suicide commando suicide is suicide is suicide
